Mistake #5. You Don’t Offer a Shopping Cart to Make it Easy for your Visitors to Buy

Source http://bookcoaching.com/wp/what-website-mistakes-are-you-making/

Just like mistake number 3, when I first read this, I thought, I am offering a service, not a product, I don’t want to sell, why would I have a shopping cart? But over the past few months life at Knowboundaries has been moving fast.

I have been writing a book in collaboration with Anne Galloway, and we are now getting really close to publishing day!

It’s a goal setting action guide called “Your Future” and we developed it from our successful workshop.  We are really excited about it, especially when we viewed the draft copy of the cover for the first time. We still need to do some proof editing, so we have not yet achieved our goal, but we have completed many milestones along the way, and are really pleased with our progress.

The book will shortly be available online through Amazon, and Waterstones, but we can also sell direct, so a shopping cart begins to be appropriate.

Mistake #4. You Don’t Optimize your Links and Headlines with Longtail Key Word Phrases
We didn’t know this 10 years ago, and that’s why we need to be willing to up level our sites
With the right key words you will guarantee more traffic from Google. Make a sales page for each and every product and service on offer. Incorporate headlines with benefits and engage readers in all sales and blog pages by concentrating on their needs and wants. It solves the concerns and challenges that your visitors want.

This mistake was really brought home to me recently when I was helping a friend translate his website from Dutch to English. He has a holiday rental business in Monnickendam called Kamerverhuur waterland . I was amazed at how his website worked, with lists of long tailed keyword phrases driving traffic to each of his pages.
But how do you build a list of phrases relevant to your product? To understand how to do this, go to google and type in the question you want answered: In this case “how do you build a list of longtail keyword phrases”. You will get a list of websites giving you exactly the information you need! And that’s how you want your website to work. You want to have visitors to your site who are interested in your product.
So in my case I want visitors who are searching for a coach who specialises in communication, relocation, and career issues, who is located near Amsterdam or offers distance coaching using SKYPE. I don’t need thousands of visitors to my site each month, but I do want potential clients to find me.
If you want to know how to build your keyword lists, I found this article on the wordtracker website to be very useful.

Mistake #3 Not Incorporating Free eBook or Site Subscription to get Opt-Ins
If you want to sell at your site, you need to sweeten the pot with an ethical bribe, so your visitors will sign up (opt-in) and leave their email to build your database. And, you also need fresh information each week or so to keep them coming back.
After they trust you, you can make some great sales. Building this database should be a top goal you attend to this year. The more that sign up, the more sales. Then, you automatically send them updates, useful information and offers.

When I read this for the first time, I really felt the pressure was on me to SELL. I felt quite uncomfortable as my chest tightened, and I felt a little breathless – both physical signs that I am resisting this step. Then I read a comment from someone who said she saw her website as a cost centre, not a profit centre, and the pressure immediately eased.
Once I was able to think more clearly, I can see how this can work for me. I have three things in my favour, I enjoy giving, I love writing and I allow myself time to do both of these activities. I am able to develop free tips and coaching exercises which will attract and benefit my visitors, and whether I want to subsequently SELL to my visitors is up to me.
A forth item in my favour, is the gift of feedback I have been receiving from people who have read this blog, which is really helping me to focus on developing different commercial possibilities.
So do you see your website as a profit centre or a cost centre, and are you prepared to change your point of view?

Mistake #2: Not Using Headlines on Every Landing Page

Headlines are far more important than the copy beneath them.

In print, eyes go to the picture first. Not so online. Research shows the first thing web users see is a headline. The headlines and subheads should tell skimmers what’s on the page without having to dig into the real copy – like a quick summary of the entire page! This is a real eye opener for me! I always enjoyed cognitive psychology when I was studying, but I had no idea that the impact of a headline was so powerful until I checked a few websites for myself.

The one that really stands out for me is this one – Karen Gurneys Start up support company. http://www.startup-support.com/

The bold headline, and orange lettering make it unnecessary to read further, you have received the intended message in an instant. Amazing! I am sure she gets lots of business.

Does anyone have a great website they want to recommend?

Website mistake No 1!

OK – here I go, it feels a bit like bearing my soul, but I am about to embark on a journey which should make me a better person, or at least make my website more commercial.

Mistake #1: Boring or “Welcoming” your Visitor

Make each word and phrase count. Write short phrases that emotionally connect with your visitor. That means benefit statements for each product or service you offer!
Your online potential buyers want information that engages them, and gives them all the information they need to make a qualified decision.
Focus on your visitor, not you!
